I'm sure you're probably scratching your head at a Tomorrowland-themed tablescape, right? Well, hang in there. All will be made clear...
One of the many things that was postponed during the first months of Covid, (I can't believe I just wrote that, let alone that it is a reality!) was Ezekiel Academy's graduation ceremony. It was scheduled for Friday, May 21st. It finally took place on June 26th. We decided to have a dinner for Jewell's best friend, Emily Anne, on the night graduation was supposed to take place. We invited her family, plus her sweet grandmother, and together we all celebrated our favorite graduate from the Class of '20.
Our two families were supposed to be heading to Disneyworld the day after graduation. That, too, was cancelled. So, we created our own fun! We decided that we would look forward to our eventual Disney vaca with a series of dinners that celebrated the various parks. First up, Magic Kingdom. The girls actually went so far as to narrow it down to Tomorrowland. I was thinking "Mid-Century Modern/Outer Space" to match the feel of The People Mover, and other rides in Tomorrowland. We headed to Dollar Tree to find some inspiration, and this tablescape was born. But as I began to pull things together, I was also reminded by many of the items of Disney's many fireworks shows. See if it doesn't evoke the same feeling for you!
I already had the linens. A white tablecloth was my base, followed by this runner I made from a scrap piece I picked up once. (I always look at the bolt ends tables for great pieces on smaller cuts.) I didn't have a specific plan for it in mind, but I knew I liked it. It is a heavy black brocade with gold fans and bursts all over it.
I love to mix metals! As long as there is something that ties them together in my mind, it doesn't bother me. The common denominator here was stars. The silver and gold glitter stars came from Dollar Tree.
I think the silver foiled star "fountain" weighted centerpieces are actually intended to tie balloons to. I picked up three to use down the center of my table. (Remember to add things in odd numbers for a more organic look.) I knew I wasn't using flowers for this table, but these kind of reminded me of a floral arrangement. They came from the balloon section at Dollar Tree.
I like a crowded tablescape. So shoot me! I like my tablescapes to be full and rich looking. I want something to look at; not blank space.
These silver and black Chinese lanterns also came from Dollar Tree. Silver and black seemed to be the color scheme this year for their graduation line. I hung a few from my overhead fixture. I take these apart and store them flat in my attic to use again.
I needed to bring in some gold to go with the gold embroidery on the table runner. I started with my gold chargers. These have been available at Dollar Tree for a couple of years, and I still see them there from time to time.
These gold spiky things are actually meant to hang on the wall. They had a very 50's/60's look to me and worked perfectly. I bought them to use for Jewell's 16th birthday party. I got them at Hobby Lobby about 2 years ago for half price. $5 each, I think. They're a great filler item.
I know you recognize the gold votive candle holders! They've been used more times than I can count, including the birthday party mentioned above, and my Apples of Gold Thanksgiving tablescape from three years ago. I placed a small round mirror underneath to catch the flame and throw it around the room. So pretty! These came from Dollar Tree, as well.
These Mid-Century glasses are called "Stax" by Libbey. The color is smoke. I got these at one of my two favorite thrift stores (Adullum House) for .25 cents each! I still find one from time to time and pick it up. I have about 9 or 10 now.
The silver star garland came from Dollar Tree as well. With a nod to Space Mountain (in Tomorrowland!), I took several of these and draped them roller coaster-style around the table and light fixture. They have wire in them, so I was able to create fun spiraling shapes. It was a whimsical touch that added so much to the table!
I also found the cardboard foil stars at Dollar Tree. They came in a couple of sizes. I scattered them before placing all of the other items on the table. They add dimension - another layer that makes a table look richer and more interesting.
Here's an aerial view of the place setting. The black plates came from - you guessed it - Dollar Tree! I've had these for years. They always come out around Halloween. They were simple and elegant in this fun tablescape. The gold thread napkins came from Hobby Lobby and were featured at Jewell's 16th birthday. They were in the Christmas collection that year. I snagged them at 50% off ($1 each) and picked up a dozen. I usually make my own napkins, so that was a splurge for me!
The flatware is my everyday pattern. It's "Austen" by Yamazaki. I have lost a few pieces over the years, so I'm always on the lookout to add back more pieces to my set.
We had a wonderful time celebrating Emily Anne on the night she should have been graduating from high school. We finally got to watch her cross the stage, and we hosted a graduation barbecue for her, as well. Disneyworld has been rescheduled for January 2021, and we've added another family so that Jewell, Emily Anne, and their other BFF, Anna Katherine, can all have their senior trips together! Its a win-win for everyone!
I'm so glad you stopped by my neck of the woods!
