Well - I swore it would never happen, but after 46 (comfortably air-conditioned and vermin free) years of life upon this earth, I have gone and done it. What, you might ask? Camp. I have spent ten nights at three different camps in the last six months. What is the world coming to?
First, I spoke at a ladies retreat back in January and spent a night with my mother and daughter at Gulf Coast Christian Camp in Lucedale, MS. I wrote about that weekend in a post called "I HEART...Christian Sisters".
Then I spent three nights at Camp Neyati in Guntersville, AL, with Jewell and our church youth group for a summer retreat after Memorial Day. I haven't been home long enough to post anything about it yet, but I will soon.
All of this was leading up to the BIG one - six nights at Indian Creek Youth Camp in Oakman, AL. Jewell talked on and on after we picked her up from there last year, and by the time we hit our driveway, I had promised to go with her the next year. Well, next year turned out to be this year. Much like childbirth, the pain and discomfort has faded and I'm ready to share with you what a wonderful time we had last week. That's right! I said "Wonderful"!
This was my first real foray as a camp counselor, and luckily, I had two other ladies who helped to ease me in along with the other newbie counselor in our cabin. But I did have some ideas that I brought to the table! In order to get to know the girls quickly, we started the first day with a quick and easy craft. I picked up colorful flip flops, bath poufs and headbands at Dollar Tree which we used to make a cute decoration for their bunks. They had fun putting them together, it helped me learn their names and they were just plain sweet! By the end of the week, several had disassembled their's and were using them in the showers.
I also picked up some plastic cups that we decorated to use in the cabin. I had brought along drinks and snacks and it was nice for each girl to have their own cup to use.
One of the other counselors had given the girls a goodie bag with candy, glow sticks and some little fun toys on the first day. I sent each girl home with a small box of assorted hard candy. I passed them out the last day (along with lots of hugs) as they packed up to go home. The cute little Chinese takeout-style boxes and fun bows also came from Dollar Tree.
I had the boxes sitting on top of a shelf all week, and the girls couldn't wait to find out what was inside!
Tomorrow I'll show you how we decorated our cabin. It was good enough to win the "best cabin" award two out of four days! Check back in. You'll love what we did.
