We are just a week and a day away from Valentine's Day! I'm working on my menu and tablescape. How about you? Trying to find a time that works for my husband, teen son (with a job), and a super busy college dorm-living daughter and her boyfriend is tough, but I'm up for the challenge!
Here's my Valentine's Day tablescape from 2021. I pulled this together the day of the dinner from things I had on hand. It's a very muted, romantic, and natural tablescape, don't you think?
It all began with my plates. I started with this red scalloped dinner plate. These are Home Trends by JC Penney and I got them for .50 cents each at a thrift store back in 2017! I didn't want to be too basic and go with a plain white salad plate, so I chose these pretty floral ones. They're called "Chinese Tree" by Booths. I just have four salad plates. I'd love to have more. I got these off eBay years ago for very little. This plate widened the color scheme for me.
While these plates don't have the exact same shape, they play well together. The even scallop of the salad plate softens the stronger points on the dinner plate. And see how the red in the salad plate pops off the dinner plate? I love that!
The brown branch at the base of the salad plate led my next few choices. I went with a wooden-look charger from Dollar Tree. I have these in a couple of colors. This is the darker, more natural wood. Next I added a vintage white napkin. It's a little formal due to the texture, so I added the wooden bead napkin rings to make it a little more casual and to tie in with the other wood elements. I finished with the Mid-century teak handled flatware. I found them at a thrift store and got four place settings for around $5. Four sets of anything has always been enough, but now that Jewell has a boyfriend, our number is often five! I'll just have to keep shopping!
Tip - When placing the different elements on your table, don't try to be too perfect. I mean, things should go where they go, but for instance, I placed the grain of my charger at an angle instead of straight up or down. The wood stem of the Chinese flowers is also placed a little off center. I placed the napkin at an opposite angle to the charger's wood grain. It just makes things more interesting!
The stemware is "Chivalry" by Libbey. I initially found these at one of my two favorite thrift shops for .25 cents each! I see them regularly and often pick up an extra one or two. I love the crinkled texture. So interesting, and it adds another layer of texture to my table.
I found this single charger a few years ago. It's metal with a pearly overlay on the edges. Since there was only one, I just use it to base centerpieces. I placed a low white vase with a brown base in the middle and added a blue silk hydrangea stem, then tucked in a few "real touch" white tulips. I have been slowly adding to my artificial flowers stash. Our cat, Possum, eats any cut flowers I bring into the house. Aside from the mess, some are toxic to him, so I try to use artificial whenever I can. These both came from "Bless Your Heart" in Eclectic. If you haven't visited this store yet, you must! It is absolutely beautiful. You all know I prefer thrift shopping to retail, but this place has gorgeous artificial florals, plus they inspire me every time I shop there! The blue hydrangea picks up the pale blue in the salad plate.
This gray table runner picked up some of the color in the salad plates and served to break up the browns between the centerpiece charger and the wider brown burlap runner that I placed over my white linen tablecloth. It also worked well with the blue hydrangea.
I love a good scatter! These wicker balls came from Hobby Lobby (the largest one) and then Dollar Tree (the smaller sizes). Dollar Tree regularly carries these in a couple of sizes and colors. I have a large bag of these that find themselves featured in tablescapes and coffee table vignettes, alike.
An aerial shot assures me that I have properly filled my space down the middle of the table. I want everyone to have something pretty to look at during dinner, so I spaced out some low tea light holders in gold and a pale red. I got them 20 years ago at Walmart.
A couple of low brass candlesticks and tapers give the table a little height without blocking anyone's view or being totally out of proportion.
I'm always picking up votive holders for next to nothing at thrift stores. This solid brass one was .50 cents. I love the cutouts. It allows the candle to cast pretty shadows on the table! The brown wire garland with red beads was part of Dollar Tree's Christmas selection back in 2020. I love the way it winds itself down the table and yet somehow pulls everything together.
I was very pleased with the simple elegance of this tablescape. It is pretty and romantic without being too in your face. And the best thing, I pulled it all from my stash. Nothing new! Having the floral print salad plate gave me a jumping off point for my color scheme, and I just took it from there!
I'm so glad you stopped by my neck of the woods!
