Snowy Village...A Winter Tablescape in Cheerful Robin's Egg Blue

If I'm anything these days, it's consistent. Consistently inconsistent! But I'm working on it. I hope to be much more regular in my blogging this Spring. We'll see! There's no time like the present, so let's get started!

Today I'm sharing the tablescape from a brunch I had in January for my mother/daughter group. We've all been friends for going on ten years, and I look forward to hosting them at my home several times a year. I decided to wait until after the new year to have our holiday get together. Everyone has such a busy schedule. It worked out beautifully, and it even seemed to stretch out the holiday season!

These beautiful blue dishes actually belong to my mother. She bought them several years ago from a lady who was moving out of her home into an assisted living facility. They are somewhat reminiscent of a set my grandmother had when my mother was growing up. I used them to decorate her holiday table years ago and had wanted to use them ever since. This winter brunch was the perfect time!

The blue set is "Castleton Turquoise" by Castleton China. It has a simple platinum band around it. I thought it played nicely against the more ornate band on the dinner plate from my wedding china. My pattern is "Palatial Platinum" by Mikasa. There are only eight place settings of Mama's blue pattern, and I had twelve coming for lunch. I decided to use six place settings from each pattern and then mix the pieces so each table would have pieces from each set. This stack was in the kitchen at the girls' table. It began with the bone dinner plate and cup and saucer set and had the turquoise blue salad plate on top.

Once I decided to mix and match, I committed and went all out! The tea cups match the two china patterns. The water goblets in the dining room (where the mothers always sit) is "Jamestown Platinum" by Mikasa, also one of my wedding patterns. The juice glass is "Parklane" by Mikasa. Since I was mixing patterns, I decided to mix metals, as well. While both sets of china have platinum trim, I went with my gold flatware. It's called "Golden American Chippendale" by FB Rogers. It was a gift to myself several years ago. You'll see why I added the gold in just a minute.

Here's a view of the different drinkware patterns. I just think it made for such an interesting table!

In the background you'll see the bottle brush trees I got at Hobby Lobby this year. They came in a set of four - a blue-green, silver, gold, and brassy gold. I got them on clearance for $5 a set (four trees). I got four sets basically for the price of one! The gold and brass trees are why I decided to pull in the gold flatware. I think everything needs at least one other component on the table to "talk to".

There's also a touch of gold on the village pieces. I scattered silver and gold tiny balls down the table. I found these on clearance for 80% off at Hobby Lobby. They were with the Christmas crafts. I love a good table scatter!

I also found the off white wool snowflakes 80% off at Hobby Lobby. I have been doing a lot of wool applique lately, and I knew I could use them for that as well. They were perfect for adding another texture to the table. I mixed silver and gold votive holders, too.

I have MORE than gotten my money's worth on these beautiful votive candle holders. I picked them up at Dollar Tree close to ten years ago.

I felt that the blue and white china and crystal drinkware would have blended in too much to an all white tablecloth, so I added this woven runner. It also looked great with the gold accents, and it, along with the "wood" chargers from Dollar Tree, helped to keep it elegant, but make it less formal. This plate stack was in the dining room on the mom's table. It has the blue dinner plate and cup and saucer set with my salad plates.

If you look closely at the two story building on the left, you'll notice that I put some inexpensive fairy lights inside the buildings to add a little extra twinkle! This was the girls table in the kitchen. The water glasses on this table are more of a balloon bottom shape. They're called "Stephanie" and are also by Mikasa.

Here's an aerial view. I found the robin's egg blue placemats at Big Lots probably 15 years ago. I had done a Breakfast at Tiffany's tablescape. They have little mother-of-pearl square sequins along the edge. They're so pretty!

I absolutely loved this tablescape! It was such a lovely way to wrap up the holiday season and embrace winter. I'll be posting the menu soon, as well as a tutorial on how I did the Christmas Village. Check back soon!

Table Re-Set...St. Patrick's Day 2022

I was looking through old blog posts recently looking for something to feature for Spring. It was close to St. Patrick's Day, so that was an obvious choice. I choose a post from March 2018. As I looked at the picture, I thought I wish I had... That gave me an idea. I'm always posting about how I "set" my table. What if I did a "re-set"? You know, kind of a before and after. So I took the original tablescape and tweaked it a little. Here's what happened!

Raspberry Lemon Sour Cream Poundcake

I keep saying I'm done with Pinterest recipes, yet I keep trying them! There was a recipe I kept seeing in my feed called "Marry Me Chicken" that everyone raved about. It looked delicious, and the ingredients sounded fantastic, so I tried it for our family Valentine's Day dinner. I was so disappointed. Granted, a good recipe depends as much on adequate preparation as it does a good list of ingredients. I consider myself an advanced cook, so I generally get good returns. Not this time! My family was gracious. I, on the other hand, complained about it throughout the meal. Not a good thing to do, but I had been so hopeful about this recipe! Oh well. I'm going back to tried and true recipes from cookbooks and friends. I still enjoy trying new things, but I'm going to look for more reliable sources from now on.

Dutch Floral Tablescape...Valentine's Day 2022

Happy Valentine's Day! I hope you have something special planned for today with those that you love. We had our family Valentine's Day dinner on Saturday night. Brack was off work, and Jewell and her boyfriend, Colby, were able to come home for the evening, so we had a fun night together. I thought the meal was a disaster! However, I love my tablescape, and the dessert was so yummy! More on all that later. For now, here's my tablescape. And if you'll take time to read through, you'll see my process of designing my table, and also see how sometimes, I go back and redo things! Here we go...

Lemon Chicken

Lemon is always going to get my vote! Main course, dessert, it doesn't matter to me. Lemon rules! This was the main dish from our Valentine's Day meal last year. Simple and full of flavor. Oh, and lemon.  It doesn't get any better than this.

Natural Elements Valentine's Day Tablescape 2021

We are just a week and a day away from Valentine's Day! I'm working on my menu and tablescape. How about you? Trying to find a time that works for my husband, teen son (with a job), and a super busy college dorm-living daughter and her boyfriend is tough, but I'm up for the challenge!

Here's my Valentine's Day tablescape from 2021. I pulled this together the day of the dinner from things I had on hand. It's a very muted, romantic, and natural tablescape, don't you think?

Biltmore Estate Brown Sugar Pepper Bacon

I think we can all agree that bacon makes the world a better place. Right? Well, if it could get any better than this bacon, I sure don't know how. This is simple and delicious, and I'm sure you probably have all three ingredients on hand. On a side note - if you're not baking your bacon, why not? I had always imagined a greasy, popping mess on the inside of my oven. How wrong I was! This is the easiest way to cook bacon. No mess, no fuss. Give it a try today!

Brown Sugar Pepper Bacon

8 slices thick-cut bacon
2 tsp coarsely ground black pepper
1/4 cup brown sugar

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking pan with parchment paper. Place bacon on the parchment, then sprinkle evenly with brown sugar and then pepper. Press in gently. Bake on top rack of the oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until crisp. Remove from pan immediately to avoid sticking. Drain on fresh parchment if needed. Avoid paper towels. Serve immediately.

This is Brack's favorite way for me to make bacon. We often have breakfast for supper, and he always asks for this!

I'm so glad you stopped by my neck of the woods!

Biltmore Estate Herbed Baked Eggs

I once read that chefs interviewing for jobs are often asked to cook an egg. Sounds simple enough, but it really shows off technique. I love eggs, and we often have breakfast for supper. This is my absolute favorite way to eat eggs now. Simple, natural ingredients combine to create an elegant and delicious dish! I found this recipe in a book I picked up on our trip called "Biltmore Traditions - A Collection of Menus, Recipes, and Stories".

You begin by melting butter and heavy cream in a ramekin. Then carefully pour in your eggs.

Top with cheese, herbs, and seasonings, and put back in the oven!

This dish is as delicious as it is beautiful.

I served it with a seasoned bacon (recipe coming soon), a hearty toast with homemade strawberry jalapeno jam, and a fruit salad.

This was a breakfast fit for a queen!

The bacon is Brack's favorite.

You can cook your eggs to your desired doneness. I like my egg yolks to be a little runny.

This classic recipe takes so little but has such an amazing payoff! Scroll down for the recipe.

Herbed Baked Eggs

1/2 tsp minced fresh garlic
1/2 tsp chopped fresh thyme
1/2 tsp chopped fresh rosemary
1 tbsp minced fresh parsley
1 tbsp freshly grated Parmesan cheese
2 tbsp heavy cream
1 tbsp butter
4 large eggs
salt and pepper to taste

Combine the garlic, thyme, rosemary, parsley, and cheese in a small bowl. Mix well. Carefully crack two eggs into a small glass bowl. Repeat with other two eggs. Place two individual gratin dishes on a baking sheet. Spoon 1 tbsp cream and 1/2 tbsp butter into each dish. Place under broiler for three minutes until bubbly. Carefully add eggs to each dish and sprinkle evenly with herb mixture. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Return to broiler and bake for three minutes. Rotate baking sheet and broil for three more minutes. Carefully transfer dish to a plate and serve. Makes 2 servings.

Note - do not substitute dried herbs or Kraft Parmesan cheese. Fresh ingredients make all the difference in this simple dish. My individual gratin dishes are 5". This is the perfect size for cooking this recipe. If yours are larger, it probably won't work. If they're smaller, you'll probably need to adjust your cook time, as the eggs will be less spread out.
